Cost Estimator for Basement Concrete Foundation

Determine the Size of the Basement

  • Length × Width × Depth (in feet or meters)
  • Example: 30 ft × 40 ft × 8 ft
=
Component Typical Cost Range Notes
Excavation $2 – $6 /sq. ft Depends on soil type, access, etc.
Concrete (Material) $125 – $150 /cubic yard 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
Formwork & Reinforcement $5 – $10 /sq. ft Includes wood forms and rebar
Labor for Pouring $4 – $8 /sq. ft Can vary by region
Waterproofing $5 – $10 /sq. ft (optional) Exterior or membrane systems
Drainage System $1,500 – $5,000 (flat rate) Includes sump pump, weeping tile, etc.
Insulation (if needed) $1 – $3 /sq. ft EPS or spray foam

Basic Formula

Concrete Volume Calculation:

Volume (cu ft) = Length × Width × Thickness (in feet) Then convert to cubic yards: divide by 27

Estimated Total Cost:

Total = Excavation + (Concrete Volume × Price per yard) + Labor + Formwork + Waterproofing + Drainage + Miscellaneous

Example Calculation (Basic Setup)

  • Example Calculation (Basic Setup)
  • Wall thickness: 8 inches (0.67 ft)
  • Slab thickness: 4 inches (0.33 ft)

Step 1: Concrete Volume

Walls:
  • Perimeter = (30 + 40) × 2 = 140 ft
  • Wall area = 140 ft × 8 ft = 1,120 sq. ft
  • Volume = 1,120 × 0.67 = 750 cu ft = ~28 cu yd
Floor slab:
  • Area = 30 × 40 = 1,200 sq ft
  • Volume = 1,200 × 0.33 = 396 cu ft = ~15 cu yd

Total concrete = 43 cu yd

Step 2: Cost Estimate

Item Cost Estimate
Excavation (1,200 sq ft) $3 × 1,200 = $3,600
Concrete (43 yd @ $140) $6,020
Formwork/Rebar (1,200 sq ft) $7 × 1,200 = $8,400
Labor $6 × 1,200 = $7,200
Waterproofing $6 × 1,200 = $7,200 (optional)
Drainage $3,000 (flat rate)
Insulation $2 × 1,200 = $2,400 (optional)

Total Estimated Cost

  • Without optional items: ~$25,000
  • With waterproofing + insulation: ~$34,600
